Kopi Luwak or ‘Cat-Poo Coffee’ in Bali

- 1 The menu reads “Enjoy this unique coffee today , it’s the only shit we serve in Bella Vista”, so I did.
- 2 And the experience was not a shitty one at all. The cafe claims, “coffee in Legian, that’s worth the journey” and rightly so, as it does sell more that just #poopcoffee. That was just my choice.
Kopi luwak , or civet coffee refers to the beans of coffee berries once they have been eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet . The civet eats the berries and then it passes through the civet’s intestines as beans … coffee beans. In essence, the beans are literally harvested from the faeces of the tree-dwelling civet cat in Indonesia.
In my ignorance I just wanted to try something different. Upon reading more – after I had drank and enjoyed Kopi Luwak, I am now hoping that the coffee plantations are not farming civets for the poop to create the beans that becomes kopi luwak. Were they wild-sourced kopi luwak or farmed civets? I don’t know. They say that their coffee beans are sourced in Sumatra and that is far a I can get.
However, I did try Kopi Luwak or ‘cat-poo coffee’ #Poopcoffee in Legian in Bali and yes – I liked it a lot. It is not dissimilar to Lebanese coffee. It has a very nice, rich and smooth taste. It is known as the world’s most expensive coffee.
I tried this Kopi Luwak at an amazing little café in Legian called Bella Vista Coffee & Juice Bar. Not only was the coffee very good but also the meal was amazing. The entire café also has their own little bakery at the front and a good supermarket next door. It serves a lot more than cat poop coffee of course, and it is a very good addition to the food scene here.
The staff is so very nice, just as the Balinese all over are.

I really hope that my Kopi Luwak was not from a caged animal, but I will still return for regular coffee, great food and very personal service in an immaculate environment.
